In other disputes, the rivals would already have their guns out and have a "walkdown", coming at eachother from a distance. A good lawman would make sure his prey was outnumbered and try to catch him by surprise to avoid violence. They were as likely to use their guns as a club, thus their elongated barrels. Masterson got his cane when his career as a lawman was over and he? was middle aged.

The movies Tombstone and Wyatt Earp specifically portrayed Earp pistol-whipping the majority of his foes, in this? series they show Bat doing it. I am wondering if it was common practice, or if Bat or Earp were specifically known for that?
