Actually its a grapple and then? a docking. If you knew anything about the Dragon it does not dock with the ISS like the other spacecraft, it has to be grappled and then docked with the ISS. Just thought you should know that you are just spiting nonsense out redtop91.
By: executivesteps. on 26 May 12, 05:40:20
Don't be too sure. That's not? what the SpaceX website says.
By: steve12211977. on 26 May 12, 02:56:37
SpaceX makes their own fuel tanks, I'm certain of that. It makes sense from a cost standpoint to have them manufactured in house. However, things like parachutes do not. SpaceX isn't trying to reinvent? the wheel. Just make it more efficient and less expensive to build.

...technically, we? are in the 10's aren't we? - and I agree with your comment tho..
By: LordTeaOfBiscuits. on 26 May 12, 02:14:24
secondly, why is there a dislike? i mean seriously thats just stupid, unless? your a russian and your annoyed that spacex is replacing you in which case.......lol.
By: LordTeaOfBiscuits. on 26 May 12, 02:05:47
amazing, marks a significant step in space exploration, i honestly couldnt be happier that commercial firms? are demonstrating such aptitude, if theres one thing that'll get this industry moving again, its definately private industry, hopefully this will restore the grand dreams of many to be back on the agenda after a long time, i wish the spacex team every success (until i form my own team in which case you can suck it xDD) but at any rate, huge congratulations are in order!

Oh hi, we're in the 00's now, when you get tired of the 60's/70's, you're free to? join us.
By: redtop91. on 25 May 12, 23:18:58
I'm gonna nitpick just because if I don't someone else will do so rudely. This is technically a grapple, not an actual docking of? the Dragon to the ISS. Minor detail though. Outstanding quality vid!
By: milibertad202. on 25 May 12, 23:04:50
History has been? made today and will forever change the future of mankind.
By: executivesteps. on 25 May 12, 22:29:36
Re "Manufacture their own parts"? I took your advice. Reading their website I learned that the rocket fuel tanks are made by Arde Corporation (not SpaceX). The parachute system is made by Irvin Aerospace (not SpaceX). I suspect (another assumption) a detailed inventory will show the majority of the parts are supplied? by other manufacturers - which is fine. Why would you make something from scratch if you can buy it. The true breakthrough is when they're able to reliably put astronauts in orbit.
By: Knewscript. on 25 May 12, 22:19:14
@pqse77 Wish I had read that post 20 minutes ago! =p No matter historic day!?
By: g0tcadaver. on 25 May 12, 22:00:06
You seem to be going completely off your own assumptions. You should probably go do some? research on their website instead of just going with what sounds best to you.
By: Mimi Konoza. on 25 May 12, 21:32:07
I attempted to clarify proper terminology for "docking" and "berthing" and I? was attacked. Who cares? NASA, SpaceX, and astronautical scientists care. My comment was not negative or bitter, it merely was a constructive criticism. I have nothing to be bitter about. I am happy that the Dragon has been successfully docked and berthed with the ISS. This is truly an historic occasion.
By: executivesteps. on 25 May 12, 21:24:15
Thanks but I find it implausible that SpaceX is manufacturing cryogenic valves, motors, electronic components and so forth "in house" as you suggest. Everything today - cars, aircraft, mechanical systems in general are all 'conglomerations'. Is SpaceX going to conceive, design, tool up, fabricate, and test a check valve that they can buy from Parker-Hannifin. If anything I believe SpaceX has done the opposite -? designing their rockets to use as many commercially available parts as possible. ???
By: g0tcadaver. on 25 May 12, 21:13:34
That's the easy part. All the? hardest things have been accomplished.
By: executivesteps. on 25 May 12, 21:13:18
I'm not sure of your statement that SpaceX was "largely independent" of the government. They received something like $400 million up front money. If things go well they receive another $1.2 billion - that's great!. But there must have been a mountain of requirements and specifications from NASA? that were not unlike what Boeing and other system developers of the past had to meet. The commercial communication satellite business started all this 30 years ago - a much better example in my mind. ???
By: g0tcadaver. on 25 May 12, 21:12:33
SpaceX manufactures all its own parts within its own company. It does not rely on other companies (besides some help form NASA) to build its rockets. That's the significance. All NASA rockets are conglomerations of parts? from various companies. SpaceX is using SpaceX engines, avionics, structure, etc and for a way cheaper price than any precedent rocket. That is the significance.

By: TheIxtlan. on 25 May 12, 20:42:22
I? wonder why they called it Dragon? The space capsule does not look like a dragon.
By: Queevox. on 25 May 12, 20:24:15
This is a great first step into a REAL space? age. Private INDIVIDUALS not government going into space.
By: TheLifePerfect. on 25 May 12, 19:43:45
I am impressed the moment the Dragon comes home and is recovered. As it stands, this has the potential? to be an enormous boost to space. Stuff like this is exactally what we need to repair our flagging economy. Bring her home, SpaceX.
By: FD3SA. on 25 May 12, 18:39:06
If? you don't understand it's not worth the time to teach you. This is not the droid you were looking for. Move along.
By: toooooooooooooooool. on 25 May 12, 18:38:11
The difference is that under? the previous model, companies competed for contracts to supply components and talent for projects under NASA control. SpaceX sent a module to the ISS largely independent of the government (besides some funding). The design, manufacture, launch and flight of the Dragon module was controlled by SpaceX up until just before the docking.
