Printmaking Processes: Intaglio

Intaglio: The lines of the image are incised, or cut, into a metal plate. This can be done with sharp tools, as in engraving, or with acid, as in etching and aquatint. Ink is applied and forced into the incised areas. Ink remaining on the surface is removed, and the plate is ready for printing.

A project for www.art-domain.co.uk conversion of an old mangle into an etching press with just a few hand tools and a cheap bench drill. All parts were sourced off the Web except for timber. This is my starting point into the world of Intaglio etching, drypoint and printing. So follow my progress over the weeks and months to see the results of my labour!

Thanks for the reply, I have since used it, and gotten some? nice results, I do neutralize it with baking soda when it's spent but I was advised to still take it to a chem disposal place -pouring it down the drain is still not a good idea though. I have also noticed colder temperatures make biting time longer and vice versa. I do test plates after a few etches and when temperatures change.

Ferric acid etching times for copper are anywhere from 1 min-24 and beyond that u just get open biting. But it really depends on the concentration. ? In my school we use the same acid for about 1 semester (or 3 months) but thats 60 people using the same acid. . .as far as disposial im not sure. I know simple baking soda can neutralize it and i think i can go down the sink then hope i helped!!

has anyone here has experience using ferric acid -I want to stat using it in my home studio(in the garage) because it doesn't need a hood and vent. what are the etching times ? how long does the acid last before needing changing and what is the? best way to dispose of it?
