The German Mercator knife is as simple as a locking knife can get. It has been around for over 140 years and has become an immortal classic. And it is still a great every-day utility knife at a reasonable price. Here's the link to a video that was filmed at the shop of Otter-Messer, Solingen. It shows the making of the Mercator knife: www.youtube.com

Three true affordable classics. I often carry a Mercator, very nice, slim edc. Bought it directly in the Factory. But if you buy anything from Otter/Mercator, do not expect premium fit and? finish. They are highly functional and work very good for a long, long time, but the finish is a bit rough. If you like the anchor knife and prefer a (slightly) better finish, check the Lütters Löwenmesser knives.

One of my favourites! Like fraudioc, mine don't arrive very sharp, but a few minutes on grinder and then with ceramics and they'll shave hair. If memory serves, the variety of Douk used? in Algeria was "El Baraka", lacking the depiction of Douk Douk on the handle for marketing in North Africa's Muslim nations. I believe the one most of us are familiar with is the "Sorciere". Thanks for this review!

I know this is probably a bit late in the day but it is a tradition in both France and GB that if you receive a knife as a gift you have to pay a small coin for it or the friendship might be severed. A bit girlie for you guys I suppose but I thought I would? mention it anyway - other than that - thanks for posting this good information.

I enjoyed your review sir. I purchased 12 Douk-Douk's and 12 K55's I too prefer the Mercator. I got mine quite some time ago at the suggestion of Mr Fred Perrin. I think I paid about 6 >7 $. Very inexpensive for such a great little knife with good steel. They make good gifts. My EDC is a Lg Sebenza Classic in raindrop Damascus. These however are outstanding knives? for the money. Every man should carry I pocket knife ! :)

Google for Couteaux Berthier and you'll find the excellent french web shop where I bought? mine, and a few other french knives - they have a great selection!

it's two months now since I bought my Douk Douk and I could say I'm really happy with it ! I've sharpened it to shaving sharp easily, the steel is really easy to sharpen but a bit soft too. Not a big problem anyway. The blade has got too a really nice patina ! Where did you bought your chrome? version ? The pouch could be really useful for carryng it around !

I just got the mercator to practice sharpening on. Your knife looks like it has better fit and finish. Your blade even looks polished. I fixed mine by putting it on my ultra fine block and stropped it. Its like a razor blade now. I guess you? cant expect much for 20 USD, but with a design this simple they should take more time for QA. I love the slim design.

My bluntly honest feedback: Good video! And thanks for sharing! The Mercator knife is a practical pocket knife, the douk-douk has this specific name and design. And also the "Ankermesser" (anchor-knife) by Otter is a great buy. ?

You must? be unlucky, they usually are very sharp when new. It is true that the drawing can fade from the blade with heavy use, it is simply printed on it.
By: fraudioc. on 21 Sep 10, 22:12:15
Today is arrived my first douk-douk. The blade on mine is not so sharp, I have to touch it up and it isn't sharper than my? Opinel. I'm a little bit disappointed with it, I think I have to change the bevel angles. I sharpened it convex and some of the drawing is disappearing from the blade too :(

Yes TEC series. looked amazing for the money but had rust all over it and i needed to sand it off? but still some remains, there is massive space each side of the pivot pin between the bolsters, it has blade play and when i open it fast the liner lock goes past the blade and gets wedged in needing a screwdriver to get it out. It is possibly the worse knife i own, i got a bad one :( !! Yes mcusta are excellent and will definatly be my nxt damascus buy ! Thanx for the reply bro :)
By: MrDagon007. on 13 Sep 10, 19:40:54
Do you mean a damascus Puma from? the affordable TEC series such as the one in my clip XNNneLHOVTo ? Mine is ok quality, but if you want really outstanding quality at a price that's not crazy, I recommend you to check out Mcusta folders, such as the elegant "Take" model in my clip rejfXqW-3ec .

LoLZ !! Yes bro your right there :) sorry thats what i ment ! I got my puma damascus in? the door bro and maaaaannn is it real bad quality but im happy cause i now have a damascus steel blade .

It is more fair to say that the CS Bushman looks very similar to? the classic Douk-Douk...
By: MrDagon007. on 10 Sep 10, 12:05:45
Thanks. Also do watch my reviews m76F0IozJ3Q and uqT3ktsLdt8 for plenty? of info on Opinels. And m04Db1zeYkk shows a lovely Nontron.
By: DJJimCowley. on 26 Aug 10, 13:25:33
The douk douk looks very similar to cold steels bushman.....?

Hello, for normal use the fingerguard should be safe? enough. Of course, a deep choil as offered on many modern Spydercos is even more safe. If you like this kind of knife, the Anchor Otter knife is actually pretty cheap so go for it!
By: LANDnLIFE. on 26 Mar 10, 03:27:53
Thank you for your nice video. You made me really curious about the Otter sailorknife. It has a discrete? fingerguard, do you find the fingerguard comfortable? Thank you again
By: MrDagon007. on 22 Mar 10, 20:27:09
Mine doesn't have play - there is a bit of flexibility but that's not the? same as play. I think you were unlucky with your Mercator, unfortunately...
By: maxtmiller. on 21 Mar 10, 12:54:08
Thanks for your always enjoyable reviews. I purchased the Mercator knife recently, and like everything? about it except there is a lot of side to side play in the blade when it is locked. Does yours do that? I would love the knife if it was tighter....

Really good review of some classic and cheap knifes.? Thanks!

During the Algerian insurrection the FLN often cut off the ears and noses of, well, anyone they didn't like, with douk douks. A bit? macabre, but an interesting historical note of the knife.

Thanks? for the heads up, I'll have to do that.
