My all time favourite is "The Sisters" from Novella, does anyone have a video of Annie? singing this song. Its so beautiful and haunting. I am going to have it played at my funeral.
I saw Renaissance play 4 times in the late 70's and early 80's, I mourned when they broke up but this brings back all those memories. I used to think I looked like Annie then, was I ever that good looking?

By: CrimsonKing589051. on 26 Mar 12, 12:56:17 She's also very? melodic, incredibly so, without which the absence of a prominent vibrato could possibly sound flat, as in lacking feeling. I understand what you mean by vibrato free but it could also suggest zero vibrato and? I wouldn't say that generally holds good for Annie or just about any other singer. I saw them in concert about 1978. They were fabulous. Annie, at least in that era, was possibly the best female vocalist I've ever heard. The musicians were incredible, and the songs from that time period were amazing. By: progfan10. on 23 Feb 11, 02:26:17 I'm not sure about that, but I don't think that Betty Thatcher gets enough credit for the lyrics (of course, since she wasn't 'in the band', I guess that's somewhat understandable). The Dunford/Thatcher collaboration was one of the best music/lyrics duos ever. When Thatcher stopped writing the lyrics and Camp took over (late '70s), the quality of the songs really went downhill (my opinion, of course).?

I personally? don't see the stiff nerdy thing that others see. Paul Simon is on the top of the heap for singer songwriters and guitar players. Art Garfunkel has a haunting ethereal voice. Jennifer Warnes is ... By: cinematic35. on 14 Jul 10, 04:01:22 Jennifer Warnes is an example of what a SIGNATURE voice is. That was one of the main requirements in that era. Today what do you hear on the radio and in movie soundtracks? Girls with average high school type voices that come dime a dozen. She had a world class signature voice like Olivia Newton John and others. None of them? sounded like the other--each one had it's own signature! Jennifer

It's a shame you don't see this level of talent anymore.Too commercialized. The ironic and funny thing is that people don't realize that when it's all about the money, quality suffers and substance is lacking, but when the love for the art is the motivating force, the money will inevitably roll in!

Agreed, as I have mentioned? elsewhere, Jon Camp is a fine vocalist in his own right, and his voice harmonises well with Annie's. They remind me of Jacqui McShee & Terry Cox from Pentangle.
By: MrJagcat1. on 29 Apr 12, 03:30:43
If I could have but one band to listen to, stranded alone somewhere in time & space, this would be it. Such a haunting but remarkably voice. And the? other members do well to compliment Annie's voice with their vocals & instraments!!!!!!!

By: rottenscotty2. on 22 Mar 12, 18:11:49
I was an obnoxious 17 y/o, totally into Who and Stones when I stumbled upon Renaissance. I was considered weird by my buddies, but how could I not be seduced by Annie's voice? I normally don't? care for voices in registers that high, but she made me forget about that...
By: valkhof54. on 26 Feb 12, 15:24:20
I always thought that I was a little strange loving Renaissance' s music. That started around the age of twenty what would be '74/'75. Now almost 4o years later I still love it but I have never met a living soul who new? were I was talking about!
By: CrimsonKing589051. on 21 Feb 12, 14:55:46
Didn't say you were. :) Just basically saying that this is unfortunately pretty much all we can hope from a live 70s video, at least as far as? prog rock goes.
By: wallktfan. on 21 Feb 12, 14:38:50
I was more lamenting as opposed to complaining. At least? their sound is preserved on vinyl/CD etc.
By: CrimsonKing589051. on 21 Feb 12, 10:26:44
This is unfortunately the best video I have seen of any of their concerts from the 70s and I am? sure most would agree. To be honest, I can't complain much about the audio quality here, it's the only concert video that compares with Jethro Tull or Gentle Giant's video releases.

By: luccaderby. on 03 Feb 12, 21:42:01
Really? So they did think of bringing it to the stage, I didn't hear about it here in the US. Yeah, to me it would have made sense to leave the music as it was or at least if there were rewrites the feel of the music should have stayed. Lucky you that you got to see the whole album? performed live, wow!
By: 2old2Rock. on 03 Feb 12, 18:51:01
Michael Dunford did try to bring Scheherezade to the London Stage about a decade ago. However, he re-wrote it for the stage and it bore little resemblance to the original. But I did get to see Renaissance perform the entire album last year and it? was HEAVENLY!
By: luccaderby. on 03 Feb 12, 17:23:41
if there was ever a fan of this band, it's me. i am a composer/musician/performer and renaissance is a major influence on my style. this song, ocean gypsy, is legendary and the entire album, Scheherezade and Other Stories, is amongst the top 10 in all music history, according to my opinion. for years i've said that Scheherezade should be made into a broadway musical, adding? more music to it and awesome dance choreography. hope a band member reads this one day!....

This the the Renaissance I remember, Oh I loved them then and I still do now.
By: wallktfan. on 08 Jan 12, 02:01:55
Annie Haslam is the greatest vocalist in rock. It's too bad the audio in this video? does not do the song and her voice justice. Renaissance was the first band I ever saw in concert. It was at the Celebrity theatre in Phoenix back around '76. The sound in person was fantastic. I designed a sound system specifically to catch the full range of her voice.
By: doggienanny. on 06 Jan 12, 04:43:07
I used to listen to them while at work at my? first job in 1975! I never hear their music on the radio. A shame. So happy to be able to enjoy Renaissance again thanks to the internet.

By: swordedaffair. on 18 Dec 11, 01:48:23
And your point is? This is the Renaissance that moved me 30-some years ago. And this music still moves me today. I saw them in concert about 1978. They were fabulous. Annie, at least in that era, was possibly the best? female vocalist I've ever heard. The musicians were incredible, and the songs from that time period were amazing. I'm sure I've heard some of the stuff from the early incarnation of Renaissance, but it hasn't had the effect on me that this has.
