However, Luciano never sang with either a Latin American or Castilian accent, although I'm sure he tried. His Italian accent is so strong that his Castilian pronunciation and phonetics become Italianized.

He mistakes some of the lyrics and goes on "speaking italian" instead of spanish in some phrases. Also he doesn't change volume almost never in the song. For example, the phrase "Granada, Manola, cantada en coplas preciosas" usually starts with a piano going to forte, but the piano is not shown by Luciano, so the phrase goes plain as the whole song.

Yes, he had this amazing ability, but it was not a natural gift. It was the result of hard work. In an interview with Jerome Hines the Maestro says that he actually had lots of trouble with singing pianissimo and had? to work very hard to develop it. As we can see, that hard work certainly paid off! :)

Pavarotti's projection was never an issue. All artists are amplified in the major houses in the States and have been for some? time. Pavarotti always had wonderful resonance that carried, but the sound was more white than burnished. Most of that is attributable to his frontal placement and his a vowels being a bit nasal. I can say with much confidence/experience that his voice carries.

Yes, interestingly enough, I? saw him dozens and dozens of times. Also, very strong and clear. Perhaps danielsferguson had no real experience hearing Pavarotti live.

Me too. I just heard from a friend who has seen him LIVE a few times in Italy, in operas. She was still a student then, and was rather surprised by Pavarotti's soft voice. But one thing is for sure...his unsurpassed technique, as though everything was so? natural to him. So much so that some people say he has 'no technique'.

I do not know? about him being 'miked' - meaning there was a microphone for him (I will ask around!). But his voice was actually not as big as people think, albeit his big size! Those who have heard him 'live' in operas will notice that he was quite soft.
