Lovro von Matacic has a profound understanding of this extraordinary work. His conception is dead-on, and the NHK follow his lead, acquitting themselves quite well, with the tympanist getting special mention.

The performance? overall is fine and well executed, but the spiritual qualities found in Jochum's last performance of the work with the Concertgebouw Orchestra (Tahra 247) are missing. Worse still, he made cuts in the coda of the work and sort of reorchestrated it to include a cymbal and triangle. What's wrong with keeping it as is? But do try the Jochum!!!!

By: gerhold101. on 10 Mar 10, 21:38:46 Thank God (whoops) someone states the reality of the sheer endeavour that creates a symphony that? interweaves a multitude of instruments into a cohesive whole. To do this and end up with a thing of beauty such as this symphony - well this is no miracle ascribable to God (whatever that may or may not be) it is Rakhmaninov's achievement alone. All around beautiful creations are ascribed to God (and famous war and football victories etc) yet the bad stuff is always human responsibility.
Rachmaninoff wasn't ... By: IVlr3vil. on 24 Feb 10, 20:18:34 Rachmaninoff wasn't just talented, he worked hard to achieve his goals. You got to give him some effort. I hate it when people keep praising some deity for his music. Had he not fallen into depression and had it not been for his psychiatrist, there would? be no symphony no. 2 there would be no piano concerto no. 2. He fought hard to get out of depression and to marry his cousin which the church denied. And it's the same church that's praising his music? God damn it.

Sergei's (not a man of religious? observances) god it was most definitely not.

Let's face it: the majority of people don't want to give glory to anybody or anything but themselves. It's? entirely human to wish to deny God, but it doesn't make it any more right!
I just wish that all of us men can come to repentance and salvation before it is too late...
Either way, the very ending makes one wonder if he was thinking about his 1st symphony (that Dies-Irć derived theme sounds like a major-version of opening theme of the earlier work, as in Op.45)...
Amjíń!!!! [Amen!] ... By: LJBSasha. on 17 Jan 10, 22:58:42 Amjíń!!!! [Amen!]
For me, this piece is the height of bittersweetness - this truly is music of love and SORROW, like when one's lamenting the irretrievable loss of something or somebody exceedingly dear? (with which or whom you're desperately in love) and having to let go. It almost feels near the end like Rakhmáńinov's answer to Wagner's "Liebestod" at the end of "Tristan und Isolde".
Not for sunrise but sunset IMHO. To God Truly be the Glory for Rakhmáńinov's talent!!!

Hi, MikeNorth0101. Just a few friendly corrections: - That "buzzy bee" sound is written in the score. The strings play trills in both ascending and descending chromatics. - As for the 9th mvt, no compassion is needed! It's titled "The Hut of Baba Yaga", and depicts a grotesque witch in flight on? a chase. Ravel would appreciate Gergiev's interpretation. - Lastly, this is the NHK Symphony Orchestra of Japan. These spectacular musicians are Japanese.

At 2:00 whats all that 'buzzy bee" sound? I never heard that before? Daniel Barenboim has never included that? Is that on the score even? It's way too fast (in places but not others) and has no compassion. I think Ravel would have been disappointed. However they are clever? these Chinese, bless em

I love "Pictures" and have listened to many versions of it . This is absolutely the best version of "Hut on Fowl's Legs" I have ever heard, very fierce and energetic, love its fast tempo. But I think "Great Gate of Kiev" was too fast. It needs to be slower, the opening notes need to be pulled out, to get the full majesty of the Great Gate. But this is certainly the definitive version of? the"Hut"!!
